How do water filters keep the healthy minerals in while still taking the things you don't want out?

Our Head of Filtration, Genevieve Upton, explains how water filters remove unwanted particles and chemicals while keeping naturally occurring minerals in your water.

When we talk about water filtration, we’re actually talking about lots of different technologies that are all sitting alongside each other.

Filtration could refer to the removal of particulate material – so dirt and grit that might be coming down the main pipes towards your house. That’s a fairly simple form of filtration.

We could also be referring to the removal of chemicals, like the chlorine that’s used to sterilise the water. That’s not done through a filtration process, but an adsorption process, where the chlorine adheres to the outside of granulated carbon.

Do water filters remove minerals from water?

Minerals are fully dissolved in the water – they’re not actually physical particles.

That means they won’t be removed with physical separation methods, and they’re not a chemical that will adhere to the outside of carbon filtration either.

Minerals are fully dissolved in the water and need a specialist process to remove them. So, while even advanced filtration can remove things like dirt, grit and chlorine from your water, naturally occurring dissolved minerals can remain.

Not everything in your tap water needs filtering out.
