7 reasons why you need a water dispenser at home

Here are the top reasons why drinking triple-filtered and purified water should be a vital part of your healthy daily diet, and why having a water dispenser at home makes it super-easy to do so.

While having your mind boggled by the myriad methods of getting super healthy in super quick time, one simple truth usually escapes us: pure water is really good for you. Lots of it. All the time. It can do wonders that bogus remedies only dream of (but still market themselves as being able to do so).

But if the quality of the key ingredient of your health regimen is inferior then it pretty much negates the benefit of any other nutritious stuff you also consume. Why scoff a bag of pricey goji berries when you’re washing them down with yucky-tasting, suspect tap water?

So why is purified water better than any other alternatives? Here are our top seven reasons:

1 - Chlorine

You know that stingy, pongy stuff they use to disinfect swimming pools? Yup – that’s also used to disinfect your drinking water. That’s why your tap water might taste a bit bitter and have a slight whiff that really shouldn’t be there. We really don’t fancy too much chemical disinfectant in our daily drink. A decent carbon filter will reduce the chlorine by 99%.

2 - Dirty pipes

Your drinking water may be relatively free of loads of dirt when it leaves the water treatment works, but it travels a fair old distance before it gets to your taps. It could be travelling miles through rusty old pipes, and that’s even before it has to go through the pipework in your building – which could also be donkey’s years old. Even though you can’t always see bits of rust, sand and other dirt coming out of your tap – it’s there.

3 - Bacteria

Aside from the chemicals and dirt that can get into your water, perhaps the scariest of all is the thought of microorganisms. Ee-euw, actual living little beasties lurking around stored water that can grow and breed. Ultraviolet purification zaps these little germs and stops them reproducing. This needs to be done once any chlorine has been removed.

Think about it – if you haven’t got chlorine in your drink then you can’t store it for too long or else bacteria will grow. So you really don’t want to be storing opened bottles of water or old jugs of filtered water because they could be swimming with germs.

4 - Essential minerals

You don’t want absolutely everything taken out of your water – because natural, pure water is healthy, right? It’s healthy because it packed full of essential minerals like Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium that your body needs.

Some people are going crazy right now for ‘reverse osmosis’ – but this method of purification takes everything out of the water – even the essential minerals, so where’s the good in that?

Purifying your mains water on demand the Our Taap way and leaving in the essential minerals means it’s like having mineral water on tap.

5 - Taste and smell

Why is it that some of the healthiest things in life taste so awful? Spoonful of spirulina anyone? Shot of wheatgrass? No one can accuse quinoa of provoking a taste sensation and a topping of flaxseed certainly doesn’t make your mouth water.

We should be willing to guzzle water by the gallon in the quest to be healthier but substandard water just doesn’t taste that great – and water really should be tasty. You should enjoy drinking it. And purified water tastes so much better than the stuff that comes straight out of the taps.

A bit of something you like is good for you. Therefore, if it’s good for your health to treat your taste buds and not offend your nostrils, then tasting great is a scientific enough health benefit for us.

6 - Less sugary drinks

A diet of sugary drinks, even though counting toward your daily water intake, will counteract any benefits of hydration. To break this unhealthy habit, start by switching out one sugary drink a day with a glass of the pure, fresh stuff straight from the water dispenser. Having purified water to hand, chilled or at room temperature, is just like having mineral water on tap - and will save you a fortune by never needing to buy bottled water, let alone sugary drinks, again.

A revitalising cup of pure water first thing in the morning will start your healthy hydration regimen. Having a glass of water before and during every meal will help you digest your food as well as manage your appetite, which is handy if you want to watch your weight.

7 - The best exercise fuel

Filtered water benefits can extend to your workout routine too. If you're exercising as much as you should be (at least around 2-3 hours a week according to the NHS) then you need the right fuel to help keep you active.

You lose a lot of water while undertaking vigorous exercise, so you need to keep your body's water balance on an even keel to prevent debilitating dehydration. It's pretty logical that you should at least be replacing whatever water you sweat out. But there's a scary and confusing plethora of radioactive-looking sports drinks and supplements out there that seem to promise to turn you into an Olympic-class athlete. They must be good for you right? Wrong - they’re just full of sugar.

You’re more likely to need nutritious supplements if you’re undertaking feats of greater endurance, like running a marathon, but normal, everyday exercise? Nothing is better than purified water for hydrating before, during and after a workout so skip the sugary energy drinks and give your body what it really needs. Crisp tasting and refreshing water is a perfect pick me up. Stick to the simple solution, and you'll be on to a winner.

Why do we need to drink more water?

The average adult body is 60% water. You need to maintain this natural balance in order to function properly and stay fit and healthy. If your body loses too much water and you don’t replenish it, the first warning signal it sends out is a raging thirst. And that’s when you lose just 1% of your water. At this point, your concentration, memory, attention-span and reaction time might dip by 10%.

Letting yourself get even mildly dehydrated not only impairs your mental performance, but your physical well-being as well. Your hand-eye motor coordination can slip and you can develop headaches and lightheadedness. You’ll also be less alert and feel tired. Staying healthily hydrated can help improve your digestion and prevent conditions such as constipation, urinary tract infections and kidney stones. All of this simply because you haven’t maintained your essential 60% water balance.

How do we get dehydrated?

Your body is losing water all the time, even when you might not notice. Obviously you lose lots when you pee, but also when you poop. Sweating is a clear sign of water loss, but the simple, continuous act of breathing also causes you to lose water - over a pint and a half a day! This is more obvious on a cold day when the water vapour you exhale becomes visible.

The best way to keep a check on your internal water balance, is to look at the colour of your pee. If you’re nice and hydrated, then your pee will be a clear pale yellow. The darker your pee, the more dehydrated you are. This is your body telling you to drink more water. Clever thing.

Drinking purified water made easy

90% of Our Taap customers say they drink more water since they had their water dispenser installed. We all know that we should drink more water to stay healthy, but actually doing something about it is now not so much of a challenge. Having a hot and cold water dispenser makes it far easier to ditch the unhealthy drinks and stick to the essential pure stuff.
