10 reasons to drink more water

Do you know all the simple yet mind-blowing ways in which drinking lots of water can improve your life? Forget the latest pills, potions, supplements, diets and fads – water really can work everyday miracles. Read on to find out the importance of drinking enough water every day.

Why should I drink more water?

1) Water can help you lose weight

Drinking water throughout the day, and especially before and during a meal, can help keep your stomach feeling full - decreasing your appetite and stopping you from snacking and over indulging, therefore helping you to consume fewer calories and helping you lose weight. This is especially successful when paired with an exercise regime.

2) Water improves your digestion

Drinking water (in moderation) while eating helps your body digest your food. This is why your doctor will highlight the importance of drinking water by always recommending drinking before and during mealtimes.

Drinking water first thing in the morning will help regulate your stomach acid and balance your metabolism. Staying hydrated means that your body will easily carry nutrients and waste between all of your major organs. Upset tummies, bloating, belching and constipation are fun for no-one and you want your body to just get on with the basic job of digestion.

3) Water makes your skin glow

You can drink water to boost your skin glow too. As well as splashing warm water on your face to open pores and cold water to close pores, drinking enough water will also add to your healthy glow as it delivers essential nutrients to your skin cells and keeps your skin replenished.

While flushing out nasty toxins which would otherwise give you an ill pallor or lead to breakouts of pimples and acne, drinking enough water improves skin hydration levels, reducing the occurrence of dry and flaky skin and helping to enhance its elasticity.

4) Water can help ease a thick head

If your body’s water balance is off because you haven’t drunk enough, then you may get tired and be less alert. Mild dehydration can cause headaches and sipping water little and often has been known to relieve a thick head within 30 minutes.

5) Water helps you keep your cool

Your body sweats in order to lower your temperature when it’s getting hot, hot, hot. This means that you’re losing water. Making sure you drink enough to replace what you’ve lost helps you carry on being able to stay cool.

6) Water can make your smile more beautiful

Drinking water helps your saliva production, which is essential but often overlooked for good oral health. A dry mouth is a risk factor for dental diseases. Regular drinking after food will also help to flush teeth clean and discourage tooth decay - especially with mains water, as it has the recommended dosage of fluoride.

7) Water helps prevent illness

The benefits of drinking more water, according to the NHS, can help prevent, treat or manage conditions such as:

headaches

constipation

skin conditions

urinary infections

gallstones

poor oral health

heart disease

diabetes

kidney stones

low blood pressure

cognitive impairment

glaucoma

8) Water protects your precious bits

Sounds obvious but did you realise that you need to be properly hydrated so that all of the joints and soft tissue in your body are adequately shielded?

We also take it for granted that all of our organs, our eyes, noses, mouths, all need to be moist. Water makes sure your inbuilt shock absorbers and lubrication capabilities are in full working order.

9) Water reduces swelling

If you’ve noticed extra-puffiness in the morning, consider upping your hydration game. Swelling can have different causes, but you should keep in mind that it can also signal you’re not getting enough water. That’s when your body tries to keep hold of all the water it can which leads to water retention, which leads to swelling. So, make sure you keep up with your hydration goals to keep puffiness at a minimum.

10) Water helps you breathe

Kind of essential really. Drinking enough water can help thin out horrible mucus and control congestion when you’re stuffy. Because we all like to be able to breathe easy.
